How-to masterclasses

Want your project or campaign to reach a more representative audience? Want to explore more participatory fundraising? Want to...

Masterclasses can be a focussed working breakfast in-person or an online consultation, a single workshop at your workplace or a series of workshops on site at one of our neighbourhood borrowing sites.

We start with your challenge – finding out what context you're operating in, what options you want to explore & exactly what you want to learn with us. Then we tailor the masterclass

How-to: Crowdfund

Ever considered doing a crowdfunding campaign? Not sure where to start? Want to make sure it’s a success?

With 3 crowdfunding campaigns & over £27,000 under their belt from 600+ backers, the team has shared their experiences on what works and what doesn't in popular masterclasses and 1:1 consultancy for co-working spaces, social enterprise networks & local community businesses.

Learn how to:

  • Choose the right target amount, platform & rewards for you
  • Create an exciting, infectious, personalised campaign that makes people dig deep & spread the word
  • Avoid the common pitfalls

How-to: Design with, not for people

Is your organisation struggling to build trust with a local community? Do you want to fundamentally change how you operate to design with, not for people?

Drawing on the team's experiences creating community entrepreneurship and sharing platforms like Open Project Night, People's Fridge Brixton and different versions of Library of Things, this masterclass draws on real-life examples to show what's possible.

Learn how to

  • Create the right environments & spaces for co-design
  • Build trust with people from all walks of life
  • Give confidence & tools to local people to start a civic project
  • Be transparent about your mission, resources & capabilities
  • Adopt a questioning & listening mindset throughout

How-to: Explore viable business models for your community asset

Got an underused library, church, shop space, park building or other asset on your hands? Want to explore how you might sustain it long-term before taking it on?

Drawing on experience of modelling 'Community Living Rooms', running co-working hubs and civic accelerators, reimagining churches, and working closely with community-managed libraries, the team now has a keen sense of real costs and the potential revenue streams behind an asset.

Learn how to:

  • Think through what enterprise models are an option for you, their cost & revenue potential & how they join together eg. co-working, childcare, venue hire, community cinema, Library of Things, makerspace, renewable energy, bulk food buying etc
  • Establish the important questions to answer before taking on a community asset – length and type of lease, strategic partnerships, cost of building repair & maintenance etc

How to: Recruit, train & manage volunteers

Organisations who have learned with us

The workshop was excellent. It really allowed us to explore, ask questions and look into the Library of Things. We left excited about next steps!
